Reasons Why Gravel Can Make a Great Ground Covering for Your Yard

by Serenity Harris

When you are looking for the right ground cover for your yard, you don't have to go with grass, which is a covering many people choose simply because it's what they are the most used to. However, there are many other options available and some offer a lot of advantages. Gravel rock may be something you want to consider. Here are some of the advantages you can get should you choose gravel rock as the ground cover for your yard:

1. There is very little maintenance needed for gravel

If you want a good-looking yard that doesn't require much maintenance, then gravel can be a fantastic option. Landscape fabric is generally put down before the gravel is. Once the gravel is in place, you won't be able to see the fabric underneath it. However, the fabric serves a lot of purposes that help make gravel very low maintenance. The fabric will significantly decrease the chances of weed growth. It will also help to stabilize the soil, help to retain soil moisture, and prevents the gravel from working its way into the soil.

With gravel, not only will you not have to worry about weeding, but you also won't have to deal with lawn maintenance. Things like mowing the lawn, raking up the lawn trimmings, edging, and watering the yard are some things you won't have to deal with when you opt for gravel.

2. There aren't concerns over the ground covering dying or decomposing

When you go with gravel for your yard, you also won't have to worry about your yard covering dying, the way you would if you chose to go with any type of lawn. Also, you won't have to worry about needing to replace the covering due to decomposition, which is something that would happen to wood chips, if you chose them for your yard. With gravel, your only real concern will be needing to sweep the gravel off the walkways once in a while, especially after a rainstorm.

3. There will be fewer insects drawn to your yard

With other types of ground covering, there can be insects that are drawn to it. This can be a problem for you when you are outside trying to enjoy your yard. Many insects are attracted to the grass. Also, there are a lot of insects that are drawn to ground coverings like plant ground, wood chips, and bark strips. However, there aren't any types of insects that are drawn to gravel. This means that gravel will help to decrease the number of insects in your yard.
